MMGM: Ranger’s Apprentice

Hello! This week I’m featuring the first book in the Ranger’s Apprentice by John Flanagan,  The Ruins of Gorlan. It was recommended to me by a friend, and, well, I didn’t really want to read it, because we have a fandom war between Rangers Apprentice and Keeper of the Lost Cities. However, he promised that if I read Rangers Apprentice, he would read KOTLC, sooooo I read it. And, actually, it was good. Really good. Plus it has a pretty dedicated fandom, which is AWESOME.  DON’T get me wrong. KOTLC is still WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better. But Ranger’s Apprentice is pretty good. I definitely recommend it. SO now that I’m done with that unnecessarily long intro, let us begin:

Meet fifteen year old Will, a foundling who is convinced that his father died a mighty warrior in battle. As Choosing Day commences, when young men and women become forever bound to a vocation, he hopes against hope to honor his father’s legacy and be selected for Battleschool training. Instead, he’s inducted into the ranks of the mysterious Ranger Corps. At first a reluctant recruit, Will gradually becomes drawn to the skills and secret ways of the Rangers.

Okay, first of all, the characters in this book are super fun. You fall in love with Will immediately, and he only gets better as the book goes on. Also, Will’s Ranger teacher is HILARIOUS. Which is super ironic, since he never smiles. He is also totally epic and ninja.

There are some pretty intense battles in this book, with some detailed descriptions… but I will reassure you, it all works out well in the end. Well, ish. I mean, it IS a series. 😀 XD

Until next week!

  1. Ranger’s Apprentice is AMAZING!!!!!!!!! And what’s this about KOTLC being better? I like both of them just about equally. My guess is you will, too, once you read the second RA book (you ARE going to read it, right? *hint hint nudge nudge wink wink*). Anyway, RA is the only series that has ever made me fangirl. I think. I’m pretty sure it was the first, at least.

    Thanks for the review, Sonora!
