Hi! Today I’m doing a quick feature on an awesome book called The Palace of Mirrors, by Margaret Peterson Haddix.
Cecelia, a young “peasant” girl, is entangled in a web of lies, and she doesn’t know who to trust. She has been informed and reminded since her birth that she is truly the princess, and the girl who has taken her place at the palace, Desmia, is an orphan who only remains there to keep Cecelia safe from the danger of the assassins who killed Cecelia’s parents–the King and Queen. Once it is safe for Cecelia to return to the throne, Desmia will step down, and hand the crown to the gracious new queen, Cecelia.
Or that’s what SHE thinks, anyways.
But when Cecelia gets tired of waiting and runs away to the palace, along with her best friend, Harper, she hears Desmia’s side of things.. and it’s TOTALLY different.
According to Desmia, DESMIA is the real princess…. and Cecelia is the imposter, planted there by Desmia’s enemies.. the ones Cecelia thought were, well, HER enemies. And not only that… but eleven other girls have come to the palace as well, claiming to be the true princess.
Desmia doesn’t believe the story that her advisers have imposed on her is true.. but she obviously knows that Cecelia, (and all the other girls’) stories aren’t real either.
So what IS the truth? That’s what Cecilia, Desmia, and Harper seek to discover in this suspenseful novel, with plot twists around every turn. Join them as they learn the truth.. and then consider what to do with it, now that they know that what they all thought was true.. isn’t.
This book by Haddix is set in the world of Just Ella, and it is JUST as fabulous. The characters have conflicts within themselves, as well as with each other, as they seek to discover what THEIR place in the world really is.
Until next week!
